(Valentine’s Day Surprise) (MarleyxKitty) (ONESHOT)

Valentine’s Day Surprise

A/N: So this is my first ever Glee fanfic and my first femmeslash. I usually write slash and het, but Marley is such a doll and Kitty is amazing. I love their pairing. So I wrote this. I tried my best, I don’t think I fully captured their personalities but you know, some things are a little different because it’s fanfiction and anything can happen in fanfiction right? Anyway, I hope you enjoy reading this oneshot :)

DISCLAIMER:  I’m just a fan with love for the show. I own nothing.

Marley had decided that she absolutely hated Valentine’s Day. It was bad enough to have to sing cheesy love ballads for the week’s song assignment and watching other couples exchanging gifts or making out in random places around the school while she was still single, pining for a boy who barely noticed her. She honestly did not think the day could get any worse. Then she had been coaxed into working a shift at the kissing booth over lunchtime by Mr Schuester. It was her own fault, though. Marley had supported Artie’s suggestion of setting up a kissing booth on Valentine’s Day to help the Glee club raise money, but she had not expected to be roped into the scheme.

So there she was. Sat up behind the wooden booth which was covered in glittering red and pink hearts. She now understood why some people claimed Valentine’s Day was merely an invention of companies to make people spend money on useless gifts and tacky cards. She had been surprised though, at the number of students who had approached the booth, but she was disappointed that the only one she wished to come to the booth had not appeared. Jake. Her last visitors to the booth had been one of the jocks who often hung out with the horrid blonde Cheerio, Kitty – Marley rarely had a bad word to say about anyone but with Kitty Wilde it was a different story. It was unfair that Kitty was so beautiful. Her silky blond hair, bewitching green eyes, those full lips and that perfect skin. No, she did not deserve to be a beauty, when she had such a nasty personality.

It was not that Marley was jealous. That was the weird thing. There was just something about the head cheerleader, she really got under Marley’s skin but it was not always in a bad way. She did dislike Kitty, but she had to give the girl credit for her strength and confidence. Perhaps if Marley had the same attitude she might have gotten Jake already, but it just was not in her nature. And lately she had come to realize that she should not have to change for him. If they were meant to be together, it would happen. If not, she would move on. Right? Yes, of course she could do it. She could get over Jake. At least she hoped she could. There was a new transfer student, and he had joined the Glee club. Ryder was smart, funny and sweet. He was also one of the cutest boys Marley had ever met. They were already firm friends, although he had only been at McKinley High for a few days. He was the sort of person she felt could be trusted with anything. And they had shared a nice kiss in the past. It was not the sort of kiss that set the world on fire, but it was still pleasant. Really, it was more than she could have asked for. There were clear signs that Ryder was interested in her. With Jake…He played hot and cold. And that was not fair.

The petite brunette rested her head on her arms, leaning against the counter of the booth. She was thinking about it too much, and she was starting to get the beginnings of a killer headache. She was just pleased that her shift would soon be over.

“Hey, Mona

The voice was a familiar one. Sultry, with a biting edge. Marley kept perfectly still, hoping the blonde Cheerio would just leave her alone, for once. Then she felt a hand tugging on a lock of her hair, hard enough to make her sit up. She glared at the girl who stood in front of the counter. “I’ve told you many times before, my name is Marley, not Mona or any of those other names”

“Whatever” Kitty replied, as she calmly reached  took  a neatly folded stack of bills out of her purse which she placed into the cash box on the counter.

Marley’s soft blue eyes went wide. “Um, I’m kinda afraid to ask this, but why so much…?”

Kitty set her jaw, tilting her head to the side slightly. “Because I felt like it. What, you can’t seriously tell me you have a problem with it?”

“Well, you’re doing a good thing. That’s rare for a girl like you” Marley laughed, but she soon stopped, shrinking back when she noticed Kitty’s cold green eyes flashing spitefully and a sneer forming on her face.

“Don’t start something you can’t finish. I’ll take your–” Kitty abruptly stopped, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath. Marley was very confused, there was no point denying it. And suspicion quickly followed her confusion as the blonde Cheerio opened her eyes again and smiled warmly at Marley. The smile, though brief, had been surprisingly real. “I’m trying to be nice here, but you’re not making it easy on me. This was a stupid idea. Why did I even listen to her? And she calls herself a guidance counsellor? Please, that’s the biggest joke I’ve heard in months…”

“Oh…You went to see Miss Pillsbury?”

Kitty rolled her eyes. “Duh, what do you think?” A frown settled on her pretty features. “Not because I wanted to, I don’t need a guidance counsellor. Total waste of my time. Apparently some of the students here at good old McKinley High have a problem with the way I treat them. Pathetic losers. I mean, it’s not my fault they can’t handle hearing a few home truths about their sorry asses” Kitty smirked. “And as for Miss Pillsbury…She can barely deal with the problems in her own life and yet she’s trying to sort our problems out with her kooky little leaflets. Do you know what she tried to give me? How To Deal With Your Anger Issues’ and ‘So, You’re A Bitchy Girl’. I swear, I was this close to throwing them back in her face, but then I thought, better keep it cool. And she talked. We talked, and she wasn’t as annoying as I thought she was. Some of what she said made sense”

Marley bit her lip. “Well, yeah. Miss Pillsbury is really nice”

“Yeah, so sweet and innocent, just like you. Ugh. Don’t make me throw up my lunch, Marley. So …” Kitty’s lips curved up into a wicked grin as she slid her hands across the counter to capture hold of Marley’s hands. “How about that kiss now?”

“W-what?” It had taken a short while for Marley to reply, as shock washed over her leaving her momentarily speechless. Surely Kitty was not serious? No. It had to be a joke. And Kitty had actually called her by the right name. That was a miracle, or Kitty was playing some twisted game. Marley thought it was the latter, she was not as naïve as some people assumed she was.

Kitty leant closer, close enough that Marley caught the faint scent of her perfume. “Since I’m now in Glee club, and frankly you guys are lucky to have my talent, I thought I would contribute to the cause. And as you saw, I did contribute generously. What can I say?” She shrugged lightly. “I’m just a giving person at heart”

The two girls were now so close that Marley could notice the finer details, like the tiny gold flecks in Kitty’s eyes and the faint freckles that lightly dusted the bridge of her nose. Marley leaned back, but Kitty followed her movement. “I don’t think we should do this” Marley’s voice was barely above a whisper. Her eyes were trained on Kitty, and at that moment it was like there was only two of them in existence. The outside world didn’t matter anymore, and the background noise had disappeared. It was just her, and Kitty. And Marley’s heart rate had elevated. Why? She was not excited. It wasn’t…anticipation, was it? How could it be? Kitty was gorgeous, but Marley was not attracted to her. That would be…crazy, right?

Kitty murmured her reply into Marley’s ear. “And I think we should. You of all people should know I like to get my own way”

“No. No. We can’t. I’m sorry, take the money back, and–”

Marley’s last ditch attempt to stop the kiss from happening was an epic fail, but she could not bring herself to care. Soft lips were pressed against her own lips, and it felt amazing. Her eyes drifted shut of their own accord as she lost herself in the kiss. Riley’s kiss was nothing compared to this one. Marley had never known that a kiss could be so electric, so perfect. She was responsive to the kiss, eager for more. Then Kitty bit Marley’s lower lip, not hard enough to make it bleed but just enough to make it tingle with a mild sting. Marley was surprised though, and her lips parted. This was just what Kitty wanted. Her tongue slid into the warm depths of Marley’s mouth, exploring, tasting, and teasing. Marley was shocked. She had never been kissed like that before. They were making out. It was a new experience for her, and she was loving it. Suddenly, it ended. Kitty pulled away, and Marley had to restrain herself from trying to start another kiss. She just stared at Kitty, who was smiling at her.

The bell rung, and Marley glanced around noticing for the first time that they had an audience. Jacob was standing there with a video camera in his hand, but he started to back away as Kitty turned to look at him with her patented frosty glare. Nobody liked being on the receiving end of it. And Jacob was a weak coward, so it affected him more. She snatched the video camera from him, and easily managed to take the tape out before shoving the video camera back at him. “Get out of here, Jewfro. Or I’m gonna call Seth and James, they love giving worthless trash like you a beat down” He heeded the warning, and ran off mumbling something about psycho hot girls. Kitty turned back to Marley, and sighed. “Ugh, that guy is such a creep”

“He has a name, Kitty”

“I know. I just don’t care enough to use it” Kitty grinned as she tucked the tape away in her backpack.

“You..You  are going to destroy that tape, right?” Marley asked, starting to get nervous.

Kitty’s lips twisted into a smirk. “Maybe. It depends, are we gonna do that again sometime? If we’re not, I’m keeping it”

Marley could not stop the bright smile that appeared on her face. “So, you want to do it again?”

“I didn’t say that!” Kitty snapped, crossing her arms. “It’s just clear that you have no idea how to kiss. I could teach you to be better. That’s all. You need a lot of practice though. We’d have to start hanging out more. After school too”

“Oh, I see…” And Marley did see. She saw how soft Kitty’s eyes had become, how relaxed her face was, how warm her smile had become. Kitty might not want to admit it, but she had enjoyed the kiss too. “Are we going to be… friends now?” That was not really the question she was asking, and Kitty knew what she meant. They both understood without saying it.

Kitty frowned at her, then rolled her eyes, heaving a deep sigh. “I guess so”

“That’s…It’s…” Marley did not even know what to say. She was happy. And it was strange that Kitty was the one who had made her so happy.

“So are you coming or not?” Kitty asked impatiently, not waiting for Marley to finish what she was trying to say.

Marley nodded. “Yeah, okay. Let me just grab the donations” Marley closed the cash box and locked it, before she picked it up.

“Hurry up, I don’t want to be late…” Kitty linked arms with Marley and started to pull her in the direction of their next class. Both girls were smiling, although Kitty was trying her best to hide it.

Marley had changed her mind. Valentine’s Day was not that bad after all.

Thank you for reading, and if you could spare a little time to leave a review, I would really appreciate it (:

Never Too Late (Oneshot) (Dre x Cheng) (The Karate Kid)

ONESHOT.A few days after the karate tournament ends,Dre is at home resting his injured leg.He is surprised when he gets a visitor. His vistor is Cheng, but what does he have to say? Dre x Cheng,SLASH.

Never Too Late

A/N: You know what, there just aren’t enough Dre/Cheng stories out there for my liking. So I wrote one, although it’s not great but I hope you enjoy reading it :)

DISCLAIMER: This is purely a work of fiction. I own nothing; I’m just a fan with love for both versions of the movie.

Dre laughed as he watched cartoons, just relaxing on the couch with his bad leg propped up on the coffee table. It still ached but slowly it was healing, which he was thankful for. Dre leant to the right as his mom, Sherry, stepped in front of him blocking his view of the TV. She just stood there, looking around.

“Baby, do you know where my keys are?”

Dre shook his head. “No…”

“I checked everywhere….”Sherry sighed as she rifled through the contents of the bag, her frown changing into a smile as she pulled out a set of silver keys.  “I gotta go, I’m gonna be late for work. Don’t you dare go outside because trust me if you do your mama will find out. Just because you were excused from school today doesn’t mean I want you walking about. You just sit and rest your leg, you hear me? “She crossed her arms and set a hard stare upon him.

Dre resisted the urge to roll his eyes, having heard her lecture more times than was necessary “Yeah, yeah. I know mom, you already told me” Dre then added quietly “Like a million times…”

Sherry raised an eyebrow. “I heard that” She smiled as she came over to him and dropped a kiss on the top of his head then hurried to the door, turning back briefly to call out “Love you baby!”

“Love you too, mom!” Dre called back, hearing the snap of the door as it closed behind Sherry.

Dre had been watching the TV for a while and was surprised when he heard a knock at the door. He got up slowly, limping to the door with the aid of crutches. Peering through the peephole he was shocked to find it was Cheng who stood outside. After he opened the door, there was an awkward silence as they both looked at each other. Sure, the two were no longer enemies but they had not really talked since the tournament ended. Dre was not sure where he stood with Cheng, but he hoped that they could become friends. He had been hiding his attraction to Cheng for a long time and he could keep doing it if it meant at least he could be closer to the dark haired boy. Dre did not know when it started, it had started slowly, creeping up on him until eventually he had realized the truth. He liked Cheng. Finally Cheng broke the eye contact, averting his gaze to the floor. “Can I come in?”

“Yeah, sure…” Dre stepped aside to let the taller boy enter, shutting the door before making his way back to the couch. Cheng sat down and then he smiled at Dre.

“So how are you?”

Dre smiled back. “Hey, at least I get some time off school so it’s not all bad”

“Does it hurt? Your leg?”

“No, not much”

“Dre…I’m really sorry. About everything .I just want you to know why I did it. I was jealous –”

“I already know why. Mei Ying. And it’s cool. And just so you know, I’m not even into Mei Ying anymore – I had a crush but that’s passed and we’re just friends now. I think we could be friends too, Cheng”

“I’m not sure I can be your friend”

A flash of hurt passed over Dre’s face. “Why?”

“You don’t understand. When I said I was jealous, I meant I was jealous of Mei Ying”

Big brown eyes widened. “Whoa. Dude, that makes no sense ‘cause that would mean you…”

“I do. I liked you from the first moment I saw you. But I was afraid. It was too dangerous. If anyone found out my life would be ruined. I knew you would not feel the same, and the thought of my parents, my friends finding out – it terrified me. So I decided that I would make you hate me, and I thought if you hated me then it would be easy for me to hate you too. Except…that never happened. I kept liking you more”

Dre was silent, letting Cheng’s confession sink in. He was shocked. Of all the things for Cheng to tell him, he had never expected to hear that. It was more than he could have ever hoped for, it was like one of his daydreams come to life.

Cheng sighed. “I should go”

“No, wait. We should talk about this…” Dre reached out and grabbed hold of Cheng’s hand. Cheng eyed Dre warily. “First, why do you think we can’t be friends? I don’t care if you’re gay. My mom brought me up to believe that love is love, it doesn’t matter about the gender”

“It’s only you that I feel this way about” The taller boy frowned. “Sometimes I wish you had never come to China at all, that I had never met you”

Dre laughed, and he could see by the look on Cheng’s face that he had not expected that reaction. “I used to wish that too. Well, almost. You know what I mean…”He put more pressure into his grip on Cheng’s hand. “I’m happy that I came here now though. And I want us to be friends”

Cheng shook his head. “I don’t think I can do it”

Dre took a deep breath. “So you’re saying it’s all or nothing?”

“It’s fine. I know you’re not …” Cheng bit his lip, seeming uncomfortable. He cleared his throat. “Even if you were, it would not be me that you liked”

“How do you know that?”

“I bullied you, Dre. I made your life miserable…”

“That’s all in the past dude. I forgive you. I’ve made mistakes before, everyone has”

“No, Dre. You say it but you don’t mean it. And even if you could look past what I did to you, you like girls”

Dre sighed. “You’re not the only one who keeps secrets…”

“I like you too”

Cheng stared at Dre hard. “Do you really mean this?”

“Yeah. I just never thought you would like me back” Dre released his hold on Cheng’s hand and threw his arms around the taller boy. He pressed his face into Cheng’s chest as he felt hot tears welling up in his eyes, and tried his best to keep them from falling. Cheng had tensed up upon first having Dre’s arms wrapped around him, but he soon relaxed. Dre was now openly crying into Cheng’s tee, but the taller boy did not mind. He patted Dre’s back after some minor hesitation, not entirely sure of the best way to comfort him. After a while Dre did stop crying, but he kept his arms locked around Cheng. He was looking down, a red flush showing on his caramel skin.

“Dre, it’s ok. You don’t have to be ashamed of crying. I just don’t understand why you cried. Aren’t you happy?”

Dre nodded slowly, his voice almost a whisper as he replied. “I am. I just…It seems like it’s not real, like it’s a dream or something.”

Cheng put his hand under Dre’s chin and tilted his face upwards. He gently wiped the tear tracks away from Dre’s face and then he pressed his lips against Dre’s slowly, almost shyly. The kiss was brief, but as Cheng pulled back Dre surprised him by leaning forward and starting another kiss. The boys only pulled apart when they heard the sound of a door slamming shut. Looking back Dre saw his mom had entered the apartment.

She was staring at them in surprise, clutching her bag in her hands like a life support. “What is going on here?”

“Mom, it’s cool. I was just talking to Cheng. We’re friends now”

“Yes, we are friends now, Mrs. Parker”

“So why have you been crying, baby?” Sherry asked her son, frowning at Cheng

“Mom!” Dre exclaimed. “It was nothing to do with Cheng, and I don’t wanna talk about it”

“You better believe we will be talking about it later young man” Her tone of voice was stern, but then she smiled at them both. “Right now though I’m hungry and I’m sure you boys must be too. Why don’t I start dinner and Cheng can use the phone to call his parents. I’ll drop him home later”

Cheng and Dre glanced at each other. “Mrs. Parker –” Cheng started, but he was cut off.

Sherry held up a hand. “Maybe you misunderstood me honey. I wasn’t asking, I was telling you that you’re staying for dinner. Now go call your parents and Dre, switch the TV off! I know Harry brought you some homework on his last visit, have you done it yet?”

“Well, I was gonna do it but then Cheng came over”

“So now you’re blaming him? What, he’s been here all day? No, I don’t think so. Now you better get in your room and complete your work” She set her bag down and went over to the kitchenette, opening the fridge and peering inside.

Dre stood up, and limped off to his room. Cheng followed behind him, on the way pausing by a side table to pick up the cordless phone. When he got into Dre’s room, Cheng shut the door behind him. Dre was sprawled on the bed, textbooks and a pile of paper strewn all around him.

“Do you think she saw us?” Cheng wondered.

Dre shrugged, scribbling something on his math sheet as he tried to work out a problem. “I don’t know. Maybe she did, but at least she’s not mad about whatever she saw”

Cheng joined Dre on the bed and dialed the number for his house. When he got through, he spoke to his father in a quick burst of Chinese that Dre could barely keep up with. He did understand it though. Well most of what was said, he was still learning. Cheng did not spend long on the line, closing with a farewell.

Dre poked him with a pencil. “So it’s ok? You can stay?”

Cheng snatched the pencil from him. “Yes, it’s fine but that answer is wrong”

“What? It can’t be, dude. I’m good at math”

“No you’re not”

Dre scowled. “Yeah, well…Whatever”.

Cheng laughed, leaning against Dre as he got into a more comfortable position. “It’s ok…I will help you” He rubbed out the wrong answer with the eraser on the top of the pencil, and then started writing a new solution.

Dre smiled, watching him. Finally after so long he had what he always wanted.

Thanks for reading :)

'Loving The Man In The Mask' Pt. 1

DISCLAIMER: Boardwalk Empire belongs to the brilliant Terence Winter; I am just a fan with love for the show and the characters.

Kate was cheerfully whistling a tune as she made her cleaning rounds at Mrs. Schroeder’s. She had only been working there for a few days. Her friend Beth had gotten ill, and while she was recovering someone needed to take her place. Beth had recommended her as a replacement maid, since she knew that Kate had just been let go from her old job due to the family losing their business and having to cut down on the hired help.

Making her way into a smaller guest bedroom she was shocked to find the room was occupied. If she had known she would have knocked first before entry. A dark haired man was sitting on the bed with a book in his hand, facing the window. He looked towards her and that was when she noticed his face, which was shocking to see, since he had a missing eye and deep scarring that spread over one side of his face. Kate gasped in shock and her hands flew up to her face. In doing so she dropped her cleaning bucket and the contents spilled out onto the floor.

“I-I-I…I’m so sorry, sir…”Kate finally managed to say, barely controlling a nervous stutter.

The man remained silent as he stood up from the bed and walked over to her, after hurriedly fixing a mask onto his face. This made Kate’s anxiety grow. Had she offended him? Was he so angry with her he did not want to talk to her?

Kate knelt to pick up the items she had dropped and hurriedly stuffed them back into the bucket with trembling hands. “It’s just that this room has been empty for the past three days, and Mrs. Schroeder didn’t say she was having a guest to stay. Oh, not that she needed to tell me, and I’m not blaming her for my mistake sir, I just…” Kate bit her lip, on the verge of tears. She did not know why she was getting so upset. It was not like she really had anything to cry about.

“Don’t worry about it” The tone of his voice was warm as he reached out to her. She did not hesitate to place her hand on his, and he helped her to stand. She felt a sense of loss when he released her hand. His grip had been firm, but gentle.

“Sir, you won’t mention this to Mrs. Schroeder, will you?” Kate asked.

He shook his head and Kate audibly sighed in relief. “Oh, thank you so much sir. I won’t disturb you again, I promise”

He chuckled, a low musical sound that was quite pleasant. Kate had the fleeting thought that she would not mind hearing that laugh again. “You didn’t disturb me”

They looked at each other for a long moment and he gave her a crooked smile. Kate returned the smile with a shy smile of her own.

“Well, I should be going now, sir” Kate wanted to find out more about this mysterious man, but she could not forget her duties.

“What’s your name?”

“Fairfield, sir. Kate Fairfield”

“It’s nice to meet you Miss Fairfield”

Kate laughed a little. “Oh, there’s no need to be formal with me. I’m just the maid. Call me Kate, please sir”

There was a pause before he nodded. “Ok .I’ll call you Kate if you call me Richard?”

So that was his name. Kate had been dying to know it, but she felt uneasy when she heard his suggestion. “I don’t think that’s a good idea, sir.”

“If I can’t change your mind yet, what if we compromise? I’ll be Mr. Harrow to you and you will be Miss Fairfield to me. Don’t call me sir anymore, ok?”

“Oh, but there really is no need to call me Miss Fairfield. I guess, at least when we are alone I can call you…Richard” Kate looked around at this point as if checking to see of anyone had overheard what she said. “Although really this is unusual for me, sir, ah I mean Richard”

“Well I must get back to work now” Kate turned to leave but was stopped by his hand resting on her shoulder.

“Aren’t you forgetting something?” Kate turned back to see he was holding her cleaning bucket.

“Oh, of course. Silly me” Kate grabbed hold of the bucket, her breath hitching as their fingers touched briefly and they seemed frozen for a split second, her icy blue eyes locking with his hazel green. It was Kate who broke eye contact first. She left, almost in a daze.

When she returned to his room later to clean it, she was disappointed to find that he was not there. Although perhaps it was a good thing since she would have no distractions. As she was about to strip the covers and sheet from the bed, she saw the book Richard had left there earlier. Curiosity overtook her and she picked it up. The book was bound in leather dyed a rich red, and the title was embossed in gold letters. It was a book of poetry and as she opened it a photo slipped out onto the bed. Kate picked it up and saw it was a photo of Richard. He looked a little younger, and was wearing a soldier’s uniform. There was a playful smile on his face. In a way it was strange for Kate seeing him without the mask but mask or no mask he was a handsome man.

Turning the photo over, she saw a few words were scrawled across the back.

 - To my darling Evie. With love, Richard

Evie? Was she Richard’s sweetheart? Was he married? No, he had no ring. She was relieved upon realizing that and she placed the photo back in the book, slamming it shut. What was she thinking? It was none of her business whether he was taken or single, but already she disliked Evie, a woman she didn’t even know. Kate sighed, placing the book onto the bedside table and then stripped the mattress bare. After remaking the bed she turned her attention to the rest of the room. Richard was a neat man, perhaps because of his military days but nonetheless it made her job easier and she was soon finished.

Kate had finished her work for the day and was on her way out of the apartment when she heard her name being called by Mrs. Schroeder who was standing by the telephone in the hallway.

“Yes Ma’am?”

Mrs. Schroeder looked the picture of elegance in a lovely blue silk ballgown and her dark hair swept up with a few tendrils framing her face. She seemed worried.

“Oh, Kate. It’s good that I caught you before you left. My babysitter just cancelled on me, and I’m meant to be going out with Mr. Thompson. I was supposed to be making a speech, and he will be so disappointed if I tell him I can’t go…”

“Do you want me to stay and look after the children?” Kate asked.

Mrs. Schroeder nodded, clasping her hands together in front of her almost as if she were praying. “Could you, Kate? I know it’s a bit sudden and you must be tired after working but the children like you, and I know I can trust you. I’ll pay for the extra time, I promise”

Kate shook her head and smiled. “You don’t have to pay me extra, Mrs. Schroeder. Honestly, it’ll be my pleasure to look after the children”

“You’re a sweetheart. Thank you. I already said goodbye to the children, and I will be back around nine o’clock…Ten o’clock at the latest” Mrs. Schroeder walked over to Kate and hugged her, enveloping Kate with the scent of her flowery perfume before hurrying over to the door and leaving. Kate waved as she closed the door and locked it.

She searched for the children and found them in the front room. Teddy was playing with a set of brightly colored tin soldiers. His sister Emily was cuddling a French porcelain doll she had fondly named Cécile. Kate sat on the couch and watched them play for a while. Then Teddy knocked over his soldiers with a scowl on his face. “I want a story. Read us the story about the mean old’ witch” He demanded, his gaze turning to Kate.

“Well, I think you forgot the magic word,” Kate replied.

Teddy seemed puzzled for a moment then his face cleared. “Please?”

“Good. Okay, let’s see now…” Kate glanced around, smiling when she saw a hardback copy of The Wizard of Oz lying on the coffee table. She picked it up and held the book so the cover was facing Teddy. “Is this the story you want?”

Teddy nodded enthusiastically and jumped up onto the couch sitting next to Kate. Emily followed him but sat to Kate’s right so Kate was in the middle of the children.

Kate opened up the book then cleared her throat and started to read, but she paused when Emily giggled.

“Mommy already told us that part”

“Oh, silly me. I wonder, is there a marker?” Kate looked at the book and saw she had failed to notice that one of the pages had the corner folded back. “Ah, here it is…”

Kate read to the children until she noticed Emily had fallen asleep and Teddy was nodding off also although he was trying to fight it. Kate glanced at the clock and saw it was almost eight o’clock. Since eight o’clock was meant to the children’s bedtime Kate hurriedly set about the task of helping the children bathe and getting changed into their nightclothes. After she tucked Emily in with her doll Cécile and gave them both a kiss on the forehead she led Teddy to his room and tucked him in too. Emily had fallen asleep again soon after Kate had said goodnight, but with Teddy it took a glass of warm milk before he drifted off to sleep.

Not long after that Kate settled herself in the living room again, waiting for Mrs. Schroeder to return. When she heard the front door being unlocked she stepped out into the hall.

“You’re back early, Mrs…”Kate’s words trailed off as she saw it was Richard entering the apartment.

“So we meet again” Richard smiled.

Kate gasped when she saw there was a large cut on Richard’s forehead. “What happened?”

“Nothing. I just had a disagreement with someone” The tone of Richard’s voice was brusque, and it was clear he did not want to talk about it. Kate decided not to ask any more questions although she was curious.

“Well you just wait here while I get some things to clean it…” Kate turned to walk away but was stopped by a hand on her arm. She turned back.

“I can do it”

“It’s okay, I can just…”

His grip on her arm tightened and he glared at her. “I said no, I’ll do it”

“Oh, alright. Um, Richard?”

“What?” He snapped, and she flinched.

“You’re hurting my arm…”

He let go, his face turning blank after an odd look that Kate thought might be remorse. “I’m sorry. Please excuse me” He brushed past her and disappeared down the hall into his room, the door shutting behind him with a soft snap.

Kate sighed heavily. Why did she have to pry? Now he was probably mad at her.

She was relieved when Mrs. Schroeder returned to the apartment, red faced and laughing with Mr. Thompson by her side.

“Kate, is everything alright?” Mrs. Schroeder asked.

“Yes. The children are sleeping soundly”

“Oh, that’s good to hear”

Mr. Thompson stepped forward, his hand disappearing into the inner pocket of his suit jacket then coming out with a neatly folded stack of bills which he offered to Kate. “Here. For your trouble”

“No, no sir. I already told Mrs. Schroeder, I enjoyed watching the children, it’s no bother”

“Kate, I would have paid the babysitter the same. Please, take it” Mrs. Schroeder gently coaxed.

“Well, you heard Mrs. Schroeder. Look at it this way, you did a fine job, and so now you’re getting paid” Mr. Thompson pressed the money into her hands.

Seeing her poised to protest he shook his head, raising a hand to stop her. “I can’t take it back now, it’s yours” Mr. Thompson smiled.

“Thank you sir” Kate put the money away in her purse, tucking it deep down inside. She hadn’t wanted it, but they were kind to give it to her and perhaps she could treat herself to a new dress. After exchanging goodbyes she left, hurrying out of the apartment complex and heading in the direction of the small boarding house she had rented a room at. It was halfway across town, but she was used to the long walk. Still, she did not like to be out walking by herself late at night. It made her uneasy. So when she felt a hand grab her shoulder she jumped and screamed, a shrill sound that she muffled with her hand after turning and seeing Richard standing there.

Kate glared at him briefly but then her eyes softened, she was not really mad. “You scared me. I thought you were a mugger or something…”

Richard took hold of her hand, and began to walk down the street with long strides leaving Kate no choice but to walk alongside him or be pulled along.

“Wait, where are you taking me?” She asked, laughing.

“I’m walking you home”

Kate could not help the smile that crept onto her face.  “You don’t have to do that”

“I know. I want to….” Richard glanced at her. “Except…I don’t know where you live”

“We are going in the right direction, but I can guide you there if you slow down a little”

“Ok. You lead the way”

As they walked they fell into a comfortable silence. Kate was happy enough to just spend some alone time with Richard. She saw an older lady smile at them and realized she probably thought Kate and Richard were a couple taking a late night stroll. Kate wished that it was true, but she had no idea of what Richard thought of her. Besides, they had only known each other for a day. Kate did not believe in love at first sight, but she felt drawn to Richard, as if somehow they had an invisible connection. Which was just insane. She knew it. Besides, she would just end up being crushed. Richard was not interested in her. Why would he be? She was nothing special.

When they reached the house where she lived in a small apartment, Richard led the way up the steps to the main door, where he let go of her hand.

“Well…Thank you again. Goodnight, Richard”

Richard simply nodded, and Kate bit her lip before leaning over and placing a light kiss on Richard’s cheek. Her heart sunk when he frowned and stepped back.

“Oh, I didn’t mean- I-I just….I’m sorry. I was…That was very inappropriate” Kate’s face felt hot as she looked down, her hair falling in front of her eyes.

“Please, can we just pretend it never happened?” Kate’s voice was getting quieter with each word that fell from her mouth. Tears were starting to prick at her eyes, threatening to come down.

“Do you like me?” He asked.

Kate sighed miserably. “It doesn’t matter now. Not really…”

“I need to know” Richard replied as he brought his hand up to her face, tilting it up so he could look directly into her eyes.

“Yes…” Kate spoke so quietly it was hard to hear.

“Are you sure?” Richard asked.

“I’ve never felt this way before. And I shouldn’t, I know. I’m just a simple maid, and you have a sweetheart. I just-”

“A sweetheart?” Richard interrupted her.

“You see, I saw the photo of you in that book. Signed with love to Evie, short for Evelyn perhaps?”

“You were snooping around in my room?”

“No, no. I was just cleaning, and so I picked up the book from the bed and well, the photo just slipped out” Kate looked panic stricken. “Please, you mustn’t think badly of me Mr. Harrow. Oh, I mean Richard…”

Richard rested a hand on her shoulder. “Relax, Kate. Just breathe…I’m not angry. And I don’t have a sweetheart. Evelyn is just part of my past, and I don’t want to discuss that with you. Not yet”

Kate slowly nodded. “I understand. I shouldn’t have said anything anyway”

“I’m glad you did tell me” Richard admitted, bringing his free hand up to her face where he brushed a few stray locks of hair away from her eyes. He leant closer, and Kate froze for a few moments, feeling like her heart had skipped a beat. Was he really going to-? He paused when their noses were almost touching; he was so close she could feel his breath on her face. “Are you sure?” There were so many things implied in that one small question, Kate knew. She did not even need to think about it.

“Yes. Oh yes. Please, Richard. I really want this” Kate looped her arms around his neck and waited, longing for his kiss. Finally, his lips pressed against hers and her eyes drifted shut as she lost herself in the kiss, which brought such sweet relief. She didn’t want it to end, even when her lungs were crying out for more air. When he pulled away, Kate leaned against him, as her legs were unsteady and she caught her breath. He did not seem to mind, wrapping his arms around her in a warm embrace and dropping a kiss onto the top of her head.

Three Little Words…

I took a deep breath before pushing open the heavy door that led into the room that Justin was staying in. I always felt uneasy in hospitals. As I walked over to the bed, I could see that he was sleeping. He looked the same as he had before the accident. Except for the jagged cut that ran down the right side of his face which had left a permanent scar.

I sighed as I sat down in a faded blue  padded chair. It was surprisingly comfy. I waited patiently, hoping Justin would wake up soon although I knew he would not be pleased to see me. He and I used to be best friends, but Justin had not spoken to me in almost three months. To be more precise, 11 weeks, three days, 12 hours and 45 minutes. Not that I was counting.

The problem between us was his girlfriend, Kate. She had always disliked me, from the day Justin introduced us. Kate had been jealous of our friendship and had claimed that I was trying to steal Justin from her, that I secretly liked him.

Which was just ridiculous. At least, the first part was. I did secretly like Justin, but it went far beyond that. I had fallen in love with him, but I never had the courage to tell him how I felt. Besides, I would never want to get in the way of his happiness. And Kate did make him happy; they were the golden couple on campus. I would have been able to bear it, if she could have let us be friends, but she hated us hanging out together. Finally, she had forced Justin to choose between me and her, and in the end she had won. He acted like I was a stranger whenever he saw me in school, or around town. When I found out he had been in a car crash I had to visit him and see for myself that he was okay, even though his mom had assured me that he was recovering well, with no serious injuries.

Although now I was here, I wondered if I had made a mistake in coming. He had really hurt me. Sometimes I thought our friendship must not have meant anything to him, since he carelessly threw it away for a girl he barely knew. Still, he loved her. And love made you do crazy things. I knew that from first-hand experience. I should have forgotten Justin, tried to move on with my life but it was impossible. I still hoped in my heart that one day we would at least be friends again, even though I would always want to be more than friends.

I decided it was time to go. Standing up from my seat, I took one last look at Justin before walking away. I was almost at the door when I heard my name being called. I turned back and saw that Justin was awake, and sitting up in his bed. Those beautiful hazel eyes were wide in shock.

“Jess? What are you doing here?” He asked.

“I just came to see how you are, that’s all” I approached his bed slowly. “I can stay a while, if that’s what you want?” I was praying for him to say yes but I doubted he would.

Justin stayed silent, and there was my answer. I was bitterly disappointed but what else could I expect? “Fine. I’ll go”

“No, wait!” He grabbed hold of my hand. “Stay. Please, I want you to stay”

I looked down at our joined hands in confusion although it made me feel warm inside. “Okay, I will”

Justin stared at me solemnly. “I’m so sorry, Jess. You were always there for me, but I let you down” He hung his head, as if he was ashamed of himself. “I thought I loved Kate, but I was wrong. And by the time I realized that, I had already pushed you away. I missed you so much”

“Do you really mean that?” I asked, but I already knew he was telling the truth. He had such a serious expression on his face, and I could see that he was sad. Still, I just had to hear him say it out loud.

He nodded, squeezing my hand gently. “Yeah. I was coming to see you, but before that I was going to see Kate, that night the accident happened. I was gonna tell her it was over between us, that I…”He paused. “It doesn’t matter now. Anyway I didn’t get a chance to tell her. When she came to visit me in hospital, she got so upset when she saw me. And the doctor only let her stay for a short visit. So the next time she visited, we talked but just as I was going to tell her, she broke up with me” He laughed, but the tone of his voice was anything but amused. “It was what I wanted so I guess it worked out, but I never thought she was that shallow, you know? She made up some weak excuses but I knew it was because of my scar”

A smile appeared on my face. “So we can be friends again”

“Jessica…I don’t want to be your friend. Not anymore”

My face fell. “I don’t understand. What about everything you said before?”

“There’s something I haven’t told you. About what I was going to say to Kate. I was going to tell her that I loved you”

“What?” I could not believe it. Tears started to fall as I leant over and hugged him as tightly as I could. We stayed there for quite a while, and eventually I climbed onto the bed and lay beside him.

“I don’t want to be your friend anymore because I want you to be my girlfriend. I know I messed up, but if you let me I want to make it up to you” He bit his lip and pointed to his face. “And then there’s this for you to think about”

I brought up a hand over his face, and placed it directly onto where the scar was, softly caressing his face. “It doesn’t matter to me. I love you. I’m always going to love you, no matter what happens. I just want us to forget the past, and move forward together”

Justin kissed me, pressing his lips against mine with a bruising force as one of his hands went around my waist. His other hand was entangled in my hair. It was a heated kiss, all fire and passion. My heart was racing. I held him close, and I never wanted to stop, I wanted our first kiss to last forever. Finally though we had to break apart. I rested my head on his chest, taking in short breaths and drawing air back into my lungs. From my position I could hear his heart beating, in a rhythm that was soothing. Justin wrapped his arms around me. At that moment I knew everything was going to be alright. I had Justin back in my life, and we loved each other. What more could I want? Nothing.
